Below are a few more favorite Black and White’s.

Oregon Bride Magazine: Best Photos

We were featured in this Summer’s Oregon Bride Magazine’s article Best Photos: What Only the Pro’s Know. The image featured was from an amazing wedding we shot at the Lake Oswego Lake House.

Oregon Bride loved this image but wanted to know what makes it different… what is it that draws you in. Well I shared the recipe of my secret sauce with them so I’ll share it here too.  After shooting a frame that shows the guests and venue in the background, I started to look for another angle that would allow for some more creativity.  I dropping to my crouching tiger stance to get a low angle and by underexposing with my shutter speed, I silhouetted Libba & Walker and pulled in the rich tones of that beautiful late summer evening sky.  To top it off, I had used my magic 50L f1.2 to make the focal point tack sharp, creating separation from the background while using the lines of bulbs to lead the viewers eyes towards the couple.

Check out more from that wedding here.

The Mentoring Project

Ty and I recently photographed a dessert and music night at Donald Miller’s house for The Mentoring Project. If you didn’t remember, Ty and I have been paired up as Mentor and Mentee through The Mentoring Project for almost 4 years now. When we first met back when he was in 5th grade it was awesome finding out we’re both way into music and big Halo fans. Back then we would skate under the covered area after school at Buckman Elementary and climb on things.

Ty’s going to be going into highschool this year and that blows my mind. These days we mostly grab coffees or go for a walk and catch up. Another cool thing we’ve found out is that Ty has a great eye for film and photography. Every once in a while I get a job that is perfect for having Ty come with and to give him a glance behind the scenes as a professional photographer. Last year we shot the Portland Volunteer Challenge at School House Supplies with Portland Mayor Sam Adams and Terry Porter.

This event was in the home of best-selling Author Donald Miller, with a very intimate performance by Sara Groves
